Quick Kacur Overview

I called my Dad’s sister today.  I have NO idea how long we talked…an hour maybe?  Who knows…  It was so great.  I think we might be cut from a similar mold.  :)

Here’s a teeny “surgical” bit on my Dad’s Mom’s family.

Margaret Pauline (Kacur) Whitaker 7/24/1909 – 12/25/2008
She JUST missed that 100th birthday party.  :(

Her parents were Joseph and Mary E (Roth) Kacur.  My kids snorted at the Joseph and Mary thing.  They both were born in Austria-Hungary.  I’ve got to brush up on my Austria-Hungary history because I – um – don’t know when or why they separated.  They immigrated in 1889 and 1890 (respectively).  I have to do some more research on that part.  They both spoke Slovak as their native language.  Mary was a kitchen maid in Vienna, Austria, before coming to the US.

In the 1910 and 1920 US Federal Census records, it shows that Joseph was a real estate agent.  In 1910, they owned a house at 548 New Salem Rd., Menallen Twp, PA (near Sandy Hill Church – as it’s written on the report).  Now, it’s Uniontown, PA.  On GoogleMaps, here’s the house that is there, now.  I highly recommend “driving up and down the street” on GoogleMaps.  It’s so much fun!  Uniontown is Western PA / Pittsburgh area.

In 1920, they lived at 407 Market St., Scottdale Borough, PA.  Sorry.  There’s no street view on that one.

Joseph & Mary had 14 children (in approximate order):
A stillborn baby
Mary
Anna
Joseph
Katherine
Albert (drove a truck for the coal mining industry – noted on the 1920 census – at age 18)
Julia
Rose
John
Pauline (died in childhood)
Steve (died in childhood)
Margaret
Virginia
Ruth

That’s all for the moment!

  1. Mom says:

Thanks Jennie WOW what you just don’t know about family. Great job keep up the good work.

  2. Sam says:

After reading this, I realized that my great grandparents, both born in Poland, came to the United States and settled in what is now a mere ghost town – Centralia, PA. Their names were Joseph and Mary. They had 17 children, some still born, some with many of the same names you listed. My grandfather, second youngest of the 17, Judy recently passed away earlier this year; he was 84. Rosie is the youngest daughter left and she is 80. While reading this, it just made me think of the similarities we share with our family history.
